Consistent with our endeavor to open the minds of our pupils to issues that extend beyond the four walls of the classroom, Modern High was proud to host the first ever Modern World Debates. (January 24th and 25th, 2010). This unique competition brought together young debaters from the UK, India and the Gulf to interact with each other and share ideas on contemporary issues that concern the global citizen.
The participating schools were,

• La Martinere School, Kolkata
• The Doon School
• Jumeirah College, Dubai
• Our Own English High School, Dubai
• Our Own English High School, Sharjah
• Dubai Modern High School
It was encouraging to watch young people overcome cultural differences and build camaraderie during the course of the event. It was gratifying to watch our students applaud and cheer for not only the team from Modern, but each time a speaker took to the dais.
The motions chosen for the various rounds such as THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT KIDULTS RULE THE ROOST, THIS HOUSE BELIEVES THAT PROFESSIONAL SPORT IS A CIRCUS were contemporary and made for an engaging debate experience. The motion for the final round was thought provoking, THIS HOUSE BELIEVES IN A WORLD WITHOUT BORDERS and the participants exhibited tremendous flair and expertise in their deliveries.
At the end of the contest St. James’ School, Kolkata was adjudged the winners.
We are positive that the success of this inaugural event will ensure that the Modern World Debates become a regular feature on our academic calendar to enable our students to grow from strength to strength.
